Berlin Wall in Seyda (Jessen), Saxony-Anhalt

Location: Seydaland Vereinigte Agrarbetriebe
more than 300 segments

About 500 running meters of the Berlin Wall are spread across three warehouses at Seydaland Vereinigte Agrarbetriebe in Seyda, in the Wittenberg district.

Seydaland emerged from an agricultural production cooperative after the fall of the Wall. In a newspaper interview, the current managing director recalls: “Due to outdated technology, however, the operation wasn’t very productive.” To keep the employees employed and paid nonetheless, “we grasped at every straw.”

One such straw was a so-called EU intervention warehouse, where surplus grain previously purchased under the EU’s agricultural policy was stored. To do this, however, the Seydaland warehouses had to be reinforced. Remnants of the Berlin Wall were ideally suited for this purpose, as that was the original intended use of these concrete elements. Without further ado, dismantled sections of the Wall dismantled were brought from Berlin and installed in the warehouses and barns in 1993.

“When students visit our dairy farm today, I often show them the Wall as well. Many don’t know what to make of it, but they’re interested.”
