Since 1991, a section of the Berlin Wall has stood in Kreuzau, North Rhine-Westphalia.
It was Colonel Peter Noack, commander of what was then Homeland Security Brigade 53 — which, along with other units, had been assigned to Berlin to dismantle the border fortifications — who had this and another section of the Wall transported to the Düren region: “I believe that parts of this inhumane structure must be preserved for posterity in a way that is visible to the public, so that future generations can see what totalitarian states are capable of when it comes to disregarding human rights,” Noack explained on the occasion of the installation of this segment.
