To mark the 125th anniversary of the Arbeiter-Samiter-Bundes (ASB), a segment of the Berlin Wall was installed in 2013 in front of the organization’s national headquarters in Cologne. It serves as a reminder that the ASB did not exist in East Germany during the country’s division.
It was not until after the fall of the Berlin Wall that East German regional chapters were able to form and successfully establish themselves over the years.
As part of this initiative, another segment was cut into 2,500 cubes and, at the ASB workshop for people with disabilities in Zesen, glued onto acrylic bases, packaged, and given as gifts to guests and active members at the anniversary event in Berlin.
Both segments had previously been painted by residents of the children’s and youth centers in Jüterbog and Königs-Wusterhausen, as well as by members of ASB Youth and a trainee.
The Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund was founded in 1888 by workers and craftsmen to provide emergency aid in the event of workplace accidents.
