Location: Cashel Street/Rauora Park
2 segments
Two Berlin Wall segments were set up on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Fall of Wall. They were temporary set up at the end of Rauora Park in central Christchurch as a monument to the Wall coming down and are now symbolic of freedom and unity.
Lucy Blackmore, Christchurch’s Council Manager of Events and Arts: It’s exciting for this monument to be in place to mark the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in November, 1989. It was a momentous time in history and it’s wonderful to have this physical reminder of what was a peaceful transition towards greater inclusiveness. This monument will resonate with local people and it will provide a focal point for a new public space in the central city. (Source: healthychristchurch.org)
The segments were already shipped to New Zealand in 2017 – supported by New Zealand’s Ministry of Culture and Heritage in cooperation with SCAPE Public Art and are redesigned here from time to time by local artists.
