Location: private property in Lyford Clay (Nygård Cay)
1 segment from Potsdamer Platz
Auctioned in Monte Carlo in 1990, a segment of the Berlin Wall found a new home on the island of New Providence in the Bahamas.
The buyer and installer was Peter J. Nygård, a Finnish-Canadian textile entrepreneur and philanthropist, who had the segment erected on his approximately 14,000 square metre property on the western tip of the island, Nygård Cay.
The buildings on the property were partially destroyed in a fire in 2009, and the land was awarded to the state of the Bahamas in 2018.
In 2020, Nygård was charged with more than ten counts of sexual abuse; in 2023, he was found guilty on four counts in Toronto.
