Tijuana, MX

Location: Friendship Park
1 Segment

On 13 August 2023, the 62nd anniversary of the construction of the Berlin Wall, 1 segment of the Berlin Wall was installed in Friendship Park in Tijuana.
Marcos Cline-Marquez, an American-Mexican TV producer from Los Angeles, originally wanted to present this segment to the then US President Donald Trump a few years earlier, but was turned down by the White House. In his search for a new, suitable location, Cline-Marquez found a grateful recipient in the mayor of Tijuana, Montserrat Caballero. She wrote the inscription on the plaque in front of the segment: “May this be a lesson for building a society that tears down walls and builds bridges”.

Friendship Park was originally a cross-border site, inaugurated in 1971 by the then First Lady of the USA, Pat Nixon, as a place of binational relations. For decades, families met here, separated only by barbed wire, later by a chain-link fence.

With a planned height of more than nine metres, the US Wall will be almost three times as high as the Berlin Wall at this point.
