On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Wall, the Axel Springer SE donated a segment of the Berlin Wall to each federal state. In the city-state Hamburg the segment was erected at Horner roundabout, next to the ramp onto the motorway in direction Berlin in November 2009.
Right after completion of the Square of German Union (Platz der Deutschen Einheit) in front of the Elbe Philharmonic Concert Hall in November 2012, the Wall segment was moved to the harbour-city, to bring history to live on a made-new location, said the mayor of Hamburg-Mitte.
